INERT LANDFILL The City of Selma operates a Construction and Demolition Landfill within the city limits. It has been in operation since 1983. It is located at the corner of Jeff Davis Avenue and Young Street. The landfill accepts waste from all generators of construction and demolition debris. The landfill also accepts vegetative waste (i.e. leaves, limbs, small trees, small tree trunks, etc). Vegetative waste collected city-wide by the Selma Environmental Services Department is deposited at this site. The landfill is open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The landfill is closed on all city holidays. The tipping fee schedule for the landfill is: |
| Minimum tipping fee | $8.00 | White goods (stove, etc.) |
$15.00 |
| Per cubic yard | $8.00 | Asbestos (properly containerized) |
$26.00 |
| Pick-up trucks | $8.00 | Roofing Shingles (per cu yard) |
$12.00 |
Certain waste cannot be deposited at the site. Primarily, no trash containing food and/or food preparation waste (i.e., “household waste”), is acceptable. Other unacceptable waste is: tires, dead animals, computer monitors, televisions, food/food containers, large tree trunks/stumps. In an effort to prevent littering of city streets to the landfill, all vehicles entering the site must be covered. Uncovered vehicles are assessed a $20.00 surcharge subsequent to an initial warning. The landfill is subject to regular environmental testing and unannounced state inspections. As waste is received at the site, it is immediately compacted by a 37.5 ton trash compactor tractor. Although federal and state regulations require only a weekly soil covering of the waste, since the landfill is located near a residential area, the waste is covered each day. This “good neighbor policy” is an additional environmental safeguard, it prevents blowing litter at the site and , aesthetically enhances, the overall appearance of the facility. When the landfill reaches capacity and is closed, which is scheduled to occur in the October 2008, the city has plans to develop a walking trail/recreational park on the site for the benefit of all of Selma.
If you wish to contact the landfill for further information, please contact the Landfill Manager, Larry Friday at (334) 874-2522.
