About the Mayor
George
Patrick Evans is serving his first term as Mayor of the City of Selma. He
took office on November 4, 2008 following the August 26, 2008 election.
Mayor Evans is a lifelong resident and native of Selma.
He spent his entire professional career as an educator with the Dallas County,
Alabama Board of Education. From 1994-2001 he served as Superintendent. From 2002-2006,
he served as Chief Academic Officer for the Alabama State Department of Education.
In 2000, Mayor Evans was elected Selma City Council President, a position that he held
for two terms until he became Mayor. As a passionate basketball fan, he
has been involved in promoting and growing the sport here in Alabama at nearly every
level. For his contributions to the game in Alabama he was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of
Fame.
Mayor Evans is a graduate of St. Mary's
College and Livingston State University. He is married to Jeannie, a nurse/educator. They have three sons, Patrick, Duane and Byron and two grandchildren, Patrick Jr. and
Kelly.
