About the Mayor

Mayor George Patrick Evans began serving his second term as Mayor of Selma, Alabama in November 2012. He was first elected in August 2008 after serving two terms as President of the Selma City Council and re-elected in August 2012. Mayor Evans was the first black City Council President and is the second black Mayor in Selma’s 190-year history.

Mayor Evans is a lifelong resident and native of Selma. Before entering electoral politics, he spent his entire professional career as an educator. From 1994-2001, he served as Superintendent of the Dallas County, Alabama Schools system. From 2002-2006, he served as Chief Academic Officer for the Alabama State Department of Education.

Mayor Evans is active in many civic and charitable organizations. Among his many duties, he serves on the Executive Committee of the Alabama League of Municipalities and as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Alabama Department of Archives and History. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo).

He is also a passionate basketball fan who has been involved in promoting and growing the sport in Alabama at nearly every level. For his contributions to the game in Alabama he was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Mayor Evans is a graduate of St. Mary's College, Livingston State University and Troy State University. He is married to Jeannie, a nurse/educator. They have three sons, Patrick, Duane and Byron and three grandchildren, Patrick Jr., Kelly and Tremaine.
