The Selma Fire & Rescue provides fire and rescue protection to the City of Selma and the three-mile police jurisdiction. Operating out of four stations, we utilize 4 engine companies, one ladder company, one rescue company, and one hazardous materials unit. On average we handle over 600 calls per year and maintain a Class 4 ISO Rating.
When fully staffed we have 54 line personnel, 4 administrative personnel, and 2 secretaries. Our line personnel operate from three shifts of personnel who work 24 hours on duty, then 48 hours off-duty.
Anyone seeking applications may apply at the city personnel office located on the first floor of City Hall at 200 Broad Street. You must be 19 years of age, have a valid Alabama Drivers license, and have a high school diploma or GED. Our hiring process consists of hiring from both Certified Firefighters and local Non-Certified candidates.
Non Certified candidates will be required to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). All successful candidates will receive further processing to include background checks, physical stress testing, and drug screenings.
Successful Non-Certified candidates will then be sent to a 10-week minimum standard school before being assigned to a station.
Fire Report: Reports take a minimum of one working business day to process. Please call our office number in advance to verify when a report can be made available. Copies of reports may be picked up at the chief’s office during regular business hours. Copies of reports dated less than a year old are free; to receive a copy of a report dated over a year will require a $10.00 processing fee.
Fire Prevention Program: Our program has been well received and has also been credited with saving lives. Each October our fire prevention team attempts to visit all of our middle and elementary schools within the city limits. We also receive requests from many other schools and agencies for our program.
We attempt to accommodate every school that we can but unfortunately due to staffing, firefighter training schedules, and budget restraints we may be unable to participate.
Fire Safety House: Our popular fire safety house has become so popular that we have had to develop new guidelines and requesting practices. Effective May 2016, we will only be able to consider the City of Selma School Events and City of Selma Sponsored Events ONLY. Please review our Agreement & Liability Form that is attached.

In-house Training Programs: Each of our firefighters comes certified by the State of Alabama as Firefighters Levels 1 & 2. Our training program, then offers additional certified firefighter training courses to our personnel.
These courses are also available to other firefighters from around the state. These continuing education courses are required within our departments rank structure so that firefighters can promote up through the ranks.
We currently offer Emergency Vehicle Driver (new in 2016); Apparatus Operator – Pumper & Aerial; Fire Instructor I; Fire Officer I & II; Fire Incident Safety Officer.
Burn Permits: Burn permits for the City of Selma and the surrounding police jurisdiction may be obtained by calling our Fire Inspection Office during regular business hours; that number is 334-874-2159.
Please provide location formation along with contact information. Weather conditions and “No Burn” restrictions imposed by the State due to drought may prevent permits from being issued.
A fire department representative will inspect the location before a permit can be issued.
